A helping hand for the poor
By CHARLES FERNANDEZ
ESTATE worker Gopal Ramasamy, 42, is relieved to be pain-free for the first time in months after a medical team detected and removed a thorn that had lodged itself in his scalp.
He was among 222 patients who attended a free health clinic for the community conducted by the Manipal Alumni Association Malaysia (MAAM) at the Sungei Buloh Estate in Kuala Selangor on Sunday.
Waiting in line: Estate workers turned up in droves for the diagnostic checks. For months, Gopal had felt as if there was a foreign body lodged in his head and the pain was bad but the clinics he visited could not detect what was wrong.
Luckily for him, doctors at the free health clinic quickly found out the cause with the aid of high-tech equipment during the community project aimed at reaching out to the poor and the underprivileged.
“This is a clinic driven by the medical team from MAAM in cooperation with Safe Aim Mutual Sdn Bhd (SAM) in communities that may lack the infrastructure and facilities for proper healthcare,” MAAM secretary Dr. T.S. Jeyabalan said.
Some 30 doctors and various other medical technicians comprising physicians, ophthalmologist, ENT surgeons, paediatricians, gynaecologists, dental, dermalogical, orthopaedic specialists and pharmacists volunteered their time and services for the six-hour health clinic.
High-tech: A doctor carrying out an ENT examination on an estate worker during the visit. Dr Jeyabalan added that the idea behind their service is to “adopt” the community at the Sungei Buloh Estate and it was a choice estate since other estates surrounded it.
“Most of our work done today would be largely diagnostic but the association will continue to follow-up on the cases that we refer to local hospitals. This is to ensure that patients receive the treatment they need,” Dr Jeyabalan said.
In addition to the consultation, the MAAM also gave out free medicine, free spectacles for school children as well as free toothbrushes and toothpaste.
The state-of-the-art- Mobile Trauma Unit from SAM was converted into an ENT Diagnostics Centre complete with high-definition endoscopic cameras. The 42-foot custom-made medical coach is a self-supporting unit with a total floor space of 196 sq ft.
Dr Jeyabalan was overwhelmed with the response towards this initiative from MAAM with patients receiving medical care with cases ranging from run-of-the-mill colds and flues to early-detection of cancer.
“We have pledged to continue this project. We want to bring this service to even more rural areas with the objective of reaching out to the hardcore poor,” Dr Jeyabalan said.

Free clinic a hit with estate staff -DARSHINI KANDASAMY

THE Manipal Alumni Association Malaysia, in collaboration with Safe Aim Mutual Sdn Bhd, conducted a free health clinic for the estate community in Kuala Selangor last Sunday. The clinic was part of MAAM’s community project, aimed at reaching out to the poor and underprivileged, who lack the necessary infrastructure and facilities for proper healthcare. The 30-man medical team comprised physicians, opthalmologists, ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgeons, paediatricians, gynaecologists, dental, dermalogical, orthopaedic specialists and pharmacists. “The idea behind our work is to adopt the community here,” MAAM secretary Dr T.S. Jeyalan said. He said most of the work was largely diagnostic but the association would follow-up on cases that had been referred to hospitals to ensure proper treatment. Apart from consultation, MAAM also gave out free medication, toothpaste and toothbrushes as well as spectacles for schoolchildren. More than 220 patients received treatment and medical care at the clinic, with cases ranging from flu to the early detection of breast cancer. One of those at the clinic, estate worker Gopal Ramasamy said: “For months, I felt as if a foreign item was lodged in my head but none of the clinics I visited could detect what was wrong.” “However, doctors here were able to detect a thorn lodged in my scalp, using their high-tech equipment and within seconds, had whisked it out,” the happy 42-year-old said. In view of the encouraging response, MAAM and SAM plan to venture into more rural areas.
